Motors of influenza vaccination uptake and vaccination advocacy in healthcare workers: A comparative study in six European countries

Abstract: These data show that there is room to improve both vaccination acceptance and advocacy rates in European HCWs, which would be expected to lead to higher rates of HCW vaccination. Benefits that could be expected from such an outcome are improved advocacy and better control of morbidity and mortality related to seasonal influenza infection.

“…the confident sentiment was 73%) showed strong positive attitudes regarding vaccination advocacy, and the second cluster (i.e. diffident sentiment was 27%) showed neutral attitudes (35). In Turkey, consistent with the literature data, it was determined that the rates of patients who received vaccination advice by healthcare employees were low.…”

“…Second, the 9-item MoVac-COVID-19 is a short tool with satisfactory psychometric properties, and therefore it can be combined with other vaccination-related instruments to form a useful toolkit to address vaccine hesitancy. For example, Kassianos et al [34] used the MoVac-Flu Scale to explore and record how healthcare workers engaged and accepted flu vaccination across six European countries. Moreover, the MoVac-Flu Scale has been used to examine predictors of uptake of the influenza vaccine among older people in Greece [35] .…”

“…Vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 became available at the end of 2020, and healthcare workers (HCWs) were in many countries among the first groups to be vaccinated [3,4]. The success of a vaccination program depends on the uptake rates among the general population and especially among HCWs, who are important for vaccination advocacy [5,6]. Apart from being at a higher risk of becoming infected with SARS-CoV-2 than the general population [7][8][9], HCWs are also potential transmitters of the virus in the clinical setting [10], where they work with the most susceptible population, i.e., the elderly, and those with certain underlying medical conditions, which require more attention and care [11,12].…”
