Motion between the Indian, Antarctic and African plates in the early Cenozoic

Abstract: International audienceWe used a three-plate best-fit algorithm to calculate four sets of Euler rotations for motion between the India (Capricorn), Africa (Somali) and Antarctic plates for 14 time intervals in the early Cenozoic. Each set of rotations had a different combination of data constraints. The first set of rotations used a basic set of magnetic anomaly picks on the Central Indian Ridge (CIR), Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR) and Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and fracture zone constraints on the CIR and S… Show more

“…A period of contemporaneous spreading along the Carlsberg and Mascarene ridges isolated the Seychelles Plate (Fig. 3e), which rotated rapidly anticlockwise between 64 Ma and 59 Ma, and caused compression along the Amirante Trench (Cande et al, 2010;Eagles and Hoang, 2014). The common assumption of orthogonal rifting between the Seychelles microcontinent and northwest India has been challenged, with some authors (Misra et al, 2014) suggesting oblique rifting based upon outcrop work in theWestern Deccan Strike-slip Zone (Fig.…”

“…Each difference in the interpretation of any component of the plate circuit (e.g., Copley et al, 2010;van Hinsbergen et al, 2011) must be propagated through the entire plate assemblage, leading to changes in inferred relative velocity. In addition, as noted by Cande et al (2010), the method of interpolation used to obtain relative motion at specific times in individual plate circuits must also be considered, as well as uncertainty.…”
