“…The immediate newborn period is important for breastfeeding and maternal-infant bonding, and separation of mothers and infants during this time is a risk factor for maternal suicide 11 and child developmental problems. 10 Although there are cases in which custody loss among women with IDDs may be warranted, such as in instances of neglect or abuse, researchers suggest that many separations are preventable. 8,9 With our findings, we suggest that evidence-based interventions to avoid preventable maternal-infant separations at delivery and to support women who retain custody of their children after delivery are warranted, especially for women in the high-risk subgroups we identified.…”

“…8,9 Early infancy is critical for breastfeeding and bonding. 10 Separation of mothers and newborns has harmful effects, including increased risk of maternal suicide 11 and child developmental problems. 10 Yet, we know little about removal of newborns of women with IDDs.…”

“…Animal experiments related to mother–infant attachment found that infant mice have neurobiological mechanisms that facilitate attachment and increased norepinephrine secretion, whereas the hypothalamic‐pituitary stress axis was inhibited. This way, parent–infant attachment is achieved, and infants can survive and be protected from danger (Csaszar‐Nagy & Bokkon, ; Perry et al, ).…”

“…e significant discrepancy between the preclinical data and the clinical findings does not only relate to the inherent uncertainty to translate the experimental findings into humans but also relate to the confounding factors that weaken the powerfulness of the data from the preclinical research. Meanwhile, the confounding effect of early social stress in the clinical trials, such as maternal separation and social isolation or defeat [38][39][40][41], on the neurodevelopment possibly causes the discrepancy between preclinical and clinical studies. As it is beyond the scope of the present work, we do not discuss all of them in the present review.…”
