Moscas ectoparasitas (Diptera: Streblidae) de morcegos (Mammalia: Chiroptera) do Município de São Luís, MA: taxas de infestação e associações parasito-hospedeiro

Abstract: -This study reports the fi rst records of the parasitism rates of the association among ectoparasitic fl ies of the family Streblidae found in phyllostomid bats in the state of Maranhão. Specimens were collected in patches of secondary forest and borders of mangrove in the village of Quebra Pote, located in the south portion of the island of São Luís. Carollia perspicillata e P. discolor apresentaram a maior riqueza de ectoparasitas, sendo cada uma, infestada por quatro espécies de moscas, apresentando taxa de… Show more

“…Regarding the number of individuals with infracommunities, we found a value higher than that reported by Bertola et al (2005) and Santos et al (2009) for S. lilium, even with less number of infestations (four) in this species. In C. perspicillata, we observed lower proportion of individuals infected with infracommunities (25.4%) than in these studies, which have captured less infested individuals (30 and 12, respectively).…”

“…Primary associations were determined when a host species had 5% or more of the individuals of a given parasite species (Dick, 2007), as well as considering high prevalence and mean intensity, and the literature data; while accidental or transitory associations in which a host was associated with less than 5% of the total individuals of a parasite species, in rare cases, and/or low prevalence and mean intensity (Dick, 2007;Santos et al, 2009).…”

“…The two Streblidae species considered in this analysis, T. joblingi and S. guajiro, are species commonly found in C. perspicillata (WENZEL, 1976;KOMENO;LINHARES, 1999;BERTOLA et al, 2005;GRACIOLLI et al, 2006;GETTINGER, 2005;DICK et al, 2007), and they may coexist in the same host (BERTOLA et al, 2005;SANTOS et al, 2009). Removal of ectoparasites may result in different proportions of ectoparasite species when reinfestation occurs, since individuals without ectoparasites may attract infestation by new species (WENZEL;TIPTON, 1966;TELLO et al, 2008).…”
