Partiendo del gran interés de Francisco Umbral por la Generación del 27, el poeta Rafael Alberti merece una atención especial, puesto que su figura y su obra poseen una presencia importante en la bibliografía umbraliana. Ambos se conocieron en Italia, en 1972, y continuaron su amistad a partir de 1975, con el regreso de Alberti a España tras su exilio. A lo largo de su obra y gracias a esta amistad, Umbral ofrece a los lectores un retrato cercano y subjetivo de Alberti. El presente trabajo recoge las claves de dicha relación para, posteriormente, señalar la influencia literaria que recibió de él. El análisis se centra, especialmente, en Mortal y rosa, probablemente su obra más lírica.
