MORPHOLOGY, ONTOGENY, AND INTRASPECIFIC VARIABILITY OF THE YEW BIG BUD MITE,CECIDOPHYOPSIS PSILASPIS(ACARI: ERIOPHYIDAE)

Abstract: All ontogenetic stases of the yew big bud mite, Cecidophyopsis psilaspis (Nalepa), from British Columbia were studied by scanning electron and light microscopy and were compared with an English population of this species. The species was redescribed from the two populations, which were found to be quite similar in general appearance and in most of the morphometric data analyzed. Spermatophores in this species are similar to those observed in other Eriophyoidea. Details of a male spermatophoric organ are descri… Show more

“…Cecidophyopsis psilaspis is widely distributed in Europe on English or common yew, Taxus baccata L. (Taxaceae), and probably occurs in temperate North America wherever this host species has been introduced, as well as throughout the coastal range of Pacific or western yew, Taxus brevifolia Nutt. (Marshall et al 1998). In addition to T. baccata and T. brevifolia, this mite also infests Taxus canadensis (Marsh.…”

“…This is the fourth contribution in a series dealing with C. psilaspis in British Columbia. The earlier papers dealt with damage to host plants (Duncan et al 1997), origin and distribution of the mite (Mitchell et al 1997), and morphology and ontogeny of the mite (Marshall et al 1998).…”
