“…As is the case in fish, the segmental organization of the amphibian pronephros has only been recently appreciated and led to a revised model of its structure 8,9,[13][14][15][16][17][18] (see inset, Figure 1c). Distinct pronephros segment domains can be identified in amphibians based on their histological features.…”

“…Distinct pronephros segment domains can be identified in amphibians based on their histological features. 13 Expression studies in the frog, Xenopus laevis, have shown that the tubule consists of at least two proximal segments and two distal segments, referred to as early and late, followed by a duct segment (Figure 1c). These five segments express solute transporters that liken them to the proximal and distal segments of both the zebrafish pronephros and the mammalian metanephros ( Figure 2).…”

“…We have previously reported that the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is localized in the terminal portion of the distal tubule in the pronephros by immunohistochemistry (Kumano et al 2005). On the other hand, vacuolar-type H + -ATPase and intercalated cells are absent from the terminal portion of the distal tubule of the pronephros (Møbjerg et al 2000;M. Uchiyama and H. Yoshizawa, unpublished).…”

“…In the present study, positive staining for NHE3 has not been observed in the proximal tubules but has been detected in the early distal nephron, such as the diluting segments, and the initial part of late distal tubules in H. nigrescens. Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies have revealed that, although well-developed interdigitations of the basolateral membrane and prominent numbers of mitochondria are present along the mammalian proximal tubule, these structures are absent, and the presence of Na + , K + -ATPase is sparse, in the proximal tubule cells of amphibians (Clothier et al 1978;Braun and Dantzler 1997;Møbjerg et al 2000;Uchiyama and Yoshizawa 2002). On the other hand, the primary features of the amphibian diluting segment are deep basolateral infoldings and elongated mitochondria occupying the cytoplasm within these infoldings, characteristics of cells of the thick ascending limb of the Henle's loop in mammalian kidney (Braun and Dantzler 1997;Møbjerg et al 2000;Uchiyama and Yoshizawa 2002).…”
