Morphological changes of the epineurium in leprosy: A new finding detected by high‐resolution sonography

Abstract: The epineurium of the ulnar nerve can be measured with the use of HRUS, and it is often strikingly thickened in leprosy patients, especially in those with ulnar involvement.

“…Visser et al measured the epineurial thickness of the ulnar nerve above the elbow in 26 leprosy patients with high-resolution ultrasound (Visser et al, 2012). The mean epineurial thickness was 0.77 mm in symptomatic ulnar nerves, 0.58 mm in asymptomatic ulnar nerves, and 0.49 mm in healthy controls (P = 0.0001).…”

“…Although MRI is a superior method for evaluation of soft-tissue injury, it is limited by spatial resolution and cannot easily assess small nerves and partial and full-thickness disruption[9]. Ultrasonography now enables visualization of the fascicle, perineurium, epineurium, and surrounding tissues of the peripheral nerves and has been proven to be efficient in various clinical settings to evaluate peripheral nerve lesions[1011121314151617181920212223242526]. …”
