Moral Effects of Physical Cleansing and Pro-environmental Hotel Choices

Abstract: Cultivating pro-environmental choices and behaviors is an important concern for tourism research and practice. Informed by recent developments in psychological research on embodied cognition and the moral effects of physical cleansing, we elicit novel insights about the causal relationship between the embodied experience of physical cleansing and pro-environmental travel choices. Across four experiments, we show that when one’s moral self-regard is heightened by the virtue of physical cleansing, it can motivat… Show more

“…Sixth, while we attempt to provide insights for managers to motivate travelers to stay at eco-friendly hotels, there are undeniably other solutions or remedies for global warming and related environmental issues. Because the success of the tourism and hospitality industries is linked to addressing environmental issues (d’Amore 1993), the traveler’s preference for eco-friendly travel products and services will help to mitigate such concerns to some extent (Cui et al 2020). As a result, researchers should look into the marketing of other travel-related sustainable products and services to gain a better understanding of how sustainability communication should be structured.…”

“…Environmental innovations have also been tested in the context of delayed housekeeping whereby hotel guests staying for multiple nights are given flexibility to decide on when their rooms (beds) should be cleaned (made) up (Cvelbar et al 2019). Lastly, experiments with options of towel re-use in guest rooms as a means of energy and water conservation (Gossling et al 2019), including the application of behavioural nudges and/or principles of consumer choice architecture (Cui et al 2019), represent another established example of environmental innovations in the hotel context.…”

“…A large body of literature approaches this topic from the theoretical lens of individual tourist attitudes and behaviors. For example, Cui et al (2020) find out that when one's moral selfregard is heightened by the virtue of physical cleansing, it can motivate consumers to engage in pro-environmental travel choices. Also, Dolnicar, Knezevic Cvelbar, and Grün (2019), using a set of quasi-experimental field studies, suggest that sharing monetary savings with guests leads to a 42% change in one specific tourist behavior with negative environmental consequences.…”
