“…However, the research of MoO 2 in HOR is rare. In our previous work [31], MoO 2 has been successfully with Ni to achieve high performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst and its HOR activity was identified. As for HOR, the small particle size is essential for the adsorption of H 2 to achieve highly electrocatalytic activity.…”

“…The results in present work may encourage the design for high performance PGM free HOR catalyst in alkaline media and the veracious evaluation of HOR kinetic process. The synthesis of Ni and Ni/MoO 2 was conducted by modified hydrothermal-reduction method according to our previous work [31]. The Ni-MoO 2 was prepared to identify the effect of Ni/MoO 2 interfaces for HOR (detailed process refers to supporting information).…”

“…Table 1 lists the recently reported non‐PGM electrocatalysts for the alkaline HOR, and a large number of them, interestingly, select Ni as the active sites. [ 26,72–76 ] Moreover, some Ni‐based materials even exhibit comparable activity to commercial Pt/C, [ 26,75–77 ] although much higher catalyst loading is required. Therefore, Ni‐based materials, as promising HOR electrocatalysts in alkaline media, are discussed with a specific focus in the following section.…”

“…[ 95,96 ] In Ni‐based heterostructured electrocatalysts, notably, Ni usually serves as the electron donor owing to the relatively small electronegativity. [ 25,73–75,78 ] In the meantime, heterostructure engineering provides the possibility to balance the adsorption of H* and OH* at different sites at the heterointerface. This is usually reported as the synergistic effect between different species.…”

“…The function of Ni oxides can be replaced by the other metal oxides. Zhuang et al 26 using Cr-decorated Ni catalyst as anode and Ag as cathode for HEMFC which shows a PPD of 50 mW•cm −2 at 60 °C and almost no degradation over a test period of 100 h. Wang et al 122 prepared that Ni/MoO2 nanosheet by using a facile hydrothermal-reduction method. The Ni/MoO2 has higher HOR activity than that of Ni, which is attributed to the positively charged MoO2 accelerates the dissociation of water molecules and promotes the OH adsorption at the Volmer step, while the nearby Ni act as the hydrogen adsorption sites and MoO2 optimizes the Ni-H bond energy.…”
