Abstract: Tubular alumina membranes exhibiting symmetric and asymmetric morphology were fabricated via electrochemical anodization of aluminium and studied for ultrafiltration application. By controlling the anodization conditions, the pore structure can be precisely controlled at the nanometre scale. Via reduction of the anodization voltage in a sudden or gradual manner, two types of asymmetric cross-section morphologies were obtained. The membranes were characterized by MWCO, pure water permeability, bovine serum albu… Show more

“…To do this an initial voltage of 24 V was applied for a period of 4 hours, this was then ramped down to 5 V at a rate of 0.4 V min -1 and anodized for a further 2 hours. This method was adopted from (Lee and Mattia 2013). This asymmetric membrane was the only way to obtain AAMs mechanically robust enough to withstand the EOF experiments and probe EDL overlap.…”

“…A very narrow pore size distribution, low pore tortuosity and controllable membrane porosity make AAO one of the top performers given its permeability/pore diameter ratio [1]. The synthetic procedure of AAO membranes enables significant tunability of the various porosity parameters (channel diameter 5–400 nm, interpore distance 20–600 nm, porosity 10–50%, thickness from 500 nm to 300 µm) [24].…”

“…AAO membranes are abundantly used as solid porous supports for asymmetric gas separation membranes [67] and have been tested in industrial applications as porous condensing layers for on-site associated gas conditioning [8–9]. However, most of AAO membrane functions are associated with gas separation processes [3,5,7–8 1012], while only few reports can be found for liquid media [1,1315]. In contrast, the narrow pore size distribution of anodic alumina membranes should result in a sharp cut-off curve and excellent filtration characteristics [1].…”
