Monodisperse Icosahedral Ag, Au, and Pd Nanoparticles: Size Control Strategy and Superlattice Formation

Abstract: This paper reports the synthesis and self-assembly of monodisperse icosahedral Ag, Au, and Pd nanoparticles with tunable sizes. Ag nanoparticles were first prepared by a modified polyol method. The as-synthesized Ag nanoparticles were all icosahedral multiply twinned particles (MTPs) with notable size variations. The variability was reduced to less than 5% after a digestive ripening post treatment. The nearly monodisperse Ag nanoparticles were then used in replacement reactions with Au and Pd precursors to pro… Show more

“…More recently, work on gold nanoclusters has resulted in atomic structure (icosahedral, decahedral, and fcc) control of isomers during the formation processes [16]. Also tunable size control of gold, silver, and palladium icosahedral clusters has been reported [17]. Silver icosahedral and decahedral clusters have been synthesized in a chemical procedure [18].…”

“…2,16 A wide variety of metal nanoparticles with different morphologies have also been synthesized and characterized by electron microscopy. [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25] Some reviews of these syntheses and related processes involving electron energy loss experiments have been published. 26,27 In these studies an electron beam is used for structural and morphological characterization, and can be used to carry out dynamic in situ experiments.…”
