High-molecular-weight aliphatic (non-aromatic) hydrocarbons were extracted from seven late Pliocene and one late Pleistocene sediment samples obtained by drilling at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 859 holes in mainly terrigenous clastic sediment of a small accretionary wedge near the toe of the lower slope of the Chile Trench. This site is located about 18 km north of the Chile Triple Junction, a tectonically active area with hydrothermal fluid activity associated with a subducting spreading ridge. The samples investigated contain variable mixtures of indigenous hydrocarbons, typical of a very early stage of diagenesis, and of migrated hydrocarbons that have encountered high thermal stress. Indigenous hydrocarbons are of a mixed terrigenous and marine origin. The high geothermal gradient at Site 859 (~100°C/km) and the hot fluids in the deep subsurface have not significantly affected the hydrocarbons in the drilled sediment section down to a subbottom depth of about 450 m. Our results suggest that the present geothermal conditions at Site 859 have not been maintained in the past for sustained periods of time.

Chemotaxonomical identification of Holocenic bogwood recovered after 2007 Niigataken Chuestsu-oki Earthquake

A Holocenic coniferous bogwood salvaged from the 70 to 100 m-deep seabed after the 2007 Niigataken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake was analyzed anatomically and chemically. The main anatomical features of the wood were the presence of (i) large window-like pits in cross fi eld and (ii) smoothwalled cells of ray tracheid. Feature (i) allowed identifi cation of the wood as genus Pinus . Feature (ii) is characteristic of section Quinquefoliae , but possible decay by the long burial (3400 -3210 cal BP) left the identifi cation inconclusive. Chemical analysis showed that the major volatile components of the bogwood were cadinane-type sesquiterpenes. In contrast, those of modern pine samples were longifolene and monoterpenes from Pinus densifl ora and Pinus thunbergii , nerolidol from Pinus parvifl ora and P . parvifl ora var. pentaphylla , and monoterpenes from Pinus koraiensis . Thus, none of the modern pines contained cadinane-type sesquiterpenes as major components. As organic components of wood are known to undergo diagenetic transformation under geological conditions, recent samples were subjected to heat treatment at 180 ° C for 24 h to simulate the long burial time. As a result, nerolidol, the main component of P . parvifl ora and P . parvifl ora var. pentaphylla was converted to cadinane-type sesquiterpenes. Therefore, it is highly likely that the bogwood sample was P . parvifl ora or P . parvifl ora var. pentaphylla , section Quinquefoliae subsection Strobus , agreeing with the anatomical feature of section Quinquefoliae .

The Molasse Basin represents the northern foreland basin of the Alps. After decades of exploration, it is considered to be mature in terms of hydrocarbon exploration. However, geological evolution and hydrocarbon potential of its imbricated southernmost part (Molasse fold and thrust belt) are still poorly understood. In this study, structural and petroleum systems models are integrated to explore the hydrocarbon potential of the Perwang imbricates in the western part of the Austrian Molasse Basin.The structural model shows that total tectonic shortening in the modeled north-south section is at least 32.3 km (20.1 mi) and provides a realistic input for the petroleum systems model. Formation temperatures show present-day heat flows decreasing toward the south from 60 to 41 mW/m 2 . Maturity data indicate very low paleoheat flows decreasing southward from 43 to 28 mW/m 2 . The higher present-day heat flow probably indicates an increase in heat flow during the Pliocene and Pleistocene.Apart from oil generated below the imbricated zone and captured in autochthonous Molasse rocks in the foreland area, oil stains in the Perwang imbricates and oil-source rock correlations argue for a second migration system based on hydrocarbon generation inside the imbricates.
