Molecular Mechanisms of Brassinosteroid-Mediated Responses to Changing Environments in Arabidopsis

Abstract: Plant adaptations to changing environments rely on integrating external stimuli into internal responses. Brassinosteroids (BRs), a group of growth-promoting phytohormones, have been reported to act as signal molecules mediating these processes. BRs are perceived by cell surface receptor complex including receptor BRI1 and coreceptor BAK1, which subsequently triggers a signaling cascade that leads to inhibition of BIN2 and activation of BES1/BZR1 transcription factors. BES1/BZR1 can directly regulate the expres… Show more

“…BR: The level of BRI1 protein decreases under high temperature whereas the level of the transcript does not change [255] and bri1 BR receptor mutant has longer PRs than WT plants in response to high temperature (26 • C-29 • C). Accordingly, the constitutive BR response mutants, bzr1-D and bes1-D, and the triple GSK (Glycogen Synthase Kinase) mutant bin2 sk2-2 (bil1) sk2-3 (bil2) (defective in the negative regulation of the BR pathway) have shorter PRs at 26 • C compared to WT plants ( Figure 5A and Table S2) [255,261].…”

“…We were able to annotate 25 of the 26 genes with evidence of maladaptive plasticity . Some of these genes showed connections to stress responses, such as a homolog of the gene BAK1 (AT4G33430.1) Lv and Li 2020) . However, most of the genes did not have clear connections to herbicide or other stress responses (Table S3).…”

“…The end products of BR biosynthesis castasterone (CS) and brassinolide (BL) are bioactive; they act in minute concentrations, which are closely monitored and adjusted. This is executed by regulation of genes involved in BR biosynthesis and catabolism, depending on the needs of intrinsic growth programs, but also according to requirements for growth adaptation and stress protection (reviewed in Clouse, 2011;Lv and Li, 2020). With respect to cold stress, there is evidence that the BR biosynthetic genes DWF4, CPD, and BR6ox2 are rapidly downregulated by cold treatment (Eremina et al, 2016b).…”
