Molecular and morphological evidence of Taenia omissa in pumas (Puma concolor) in the Peruvian Highlands

Abstract: A total of 41 cestodes were collected during necropsy examination on 2 pumas (Puma concolor) that were found in 2 communities in Canchis province, Cuzco region, Peru, at 4500 meters above sea level (Peruvian Andes). The cestodes were evaluated morphologically and molecularly. A fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox1) was used as a genetic marker. All the cestodes were identified as Taenia omissa. In the present report, we give a brief description by molecular and morphological … Show more

“…Taenia spp., which include approximately 45 species of cosmopolitan parasitic tapeworms, live in the small intestine of carnivorous mammals, where they complete development to adulthood and reproduce (Gomez‐Puerta et al . 2016). Given the Taenia species that utilize feline hosts, 14 could use felines as their final host, including Taenialaticollis , T. omissa , and T. taeniaeformis (Syn.…”

“…El ADN fue extraído de tres ejemplares de trematodos (2 del venado cola blanca y 1 de la taruca) usando el protocolo descrito por Gomez-Puerta et al (2016). Se realizó una reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) para amplificar parcialmente los genes mitocondriales citocromo c oxidasa subunidad 1 (cox1) y el NADH deshidrogenasa subunidad 1 (nad1).…”
