Multi-level inverters (MLIs) have been widely used in recent years due to their various advantages in industrial and grid-connected applications. Traditional MLI topologies are being hampered by the rapid surge of renewable energy systems (RES) as a result of performance difficulties such as poor power reliability, an economically unviable structure, and a lack of efficiency. These difficulties are due to the traditional MLI topologies’ inability to keep up with the increasing demand for RES. Because of concerns about performance and limitations posed by classic MLI topologies, researchers have found themselves driven to the idea of building innovative hybrid MLI topologies. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of multilevel inverter systems that are wired into the main power supply. Grid-connected inverter types and their configurations are discussed in depth in this review. Diverse multi-level inverter topologies, as well as the different approaches, are divided into various categories and discussed in depth. Additionally, a number of control reference frames for inverters were brought forward for discussion. Furthermore, different inverter control strategies were investigated, followed by a tabular summary of recent developments in the inverter-related literature for the convenience of the readers. Moreover, the recently proposed grid-connected multi-level inverter systems were discussed including their findings and innovations. In conclusion, a brief description of the study’s scope was offered and research directions for future studies were provided.

Purpose These implementations not only generate excessive voltage levels to enhance the quality of power but also include a detailed investigating of the various modulation methods and control schemes for multilevel inverter (MLI) topologies. Reduced harmonic modulation technology is used to produce 11-level output voltage with the production of renewable energy applications. The simulation is done in the MATLAB/Simulink for 11-level symmetric MLI and is correlated with the conventional inverter design. Design/methodology/approach This paper is focused on investigating the different types of asymmetric, symmetric and hybrid topologies and control methods used for the modular multilevel inverter (MMI) operation. Classical MLI configurations are affected by performance issues such as poor power quality, uneconomic structure and low efficiency. Findings The variations in both carrier and reference signals and their performance are analyzed for the proposed inverter topologies. The simulation result compares unipolar and bipolar pulse-width modulation (PWM) techniques with total harmonic distortion (THD) results. The solar-fed 11-level MMI is controlled using various modulation strategies, which are connected to marine emergency lighting loads. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) have become a trend in the field of DC/AC inverters and one of the main requirements in many of the industrial applications. MLIs spread in the academic research field and replaced the conventional inverters due to the several advantages that these topologies presented over the conventional inverters, as follows. (1) Operate with a high number of steps in the output voltage waveform, which helps in reducing the level of harmonics and presents fine and clear waveforms; furthermore, reduce the voltage stress on the switching devices and gives it a long lifetime and more reliability. (2) MLIs have a low rating of the switching devices, which has a noticeable role in reducing the system cost. (3) MLIs can be operated at both higher and lower switching frequencies, which reduces the level of power losses and enhances the overall efficiency. The main problem that faces the researchers in the multilevel inverters field is to design a topology that uses the optimum number of components to ensure the low cost and obtain a high efficiency. This paper presents a description of different topologies of MLIs that were investigated in the last two decades to show the pros and cons of each topology. Also a set of performance parameters that were used to measure the effectiveness of the MLI topologies have been discussed.
