Inhibition constitutes one of the main executive functions and it is important to more complex skills such as fluid intelligence. Actually, there is an agreement on distinguishing three inhibitory types: perceptual, cognitive and response inhibition. Several studies show the differential engagement of these inhibitory types in different skills. However, there is no registered evidence about the differential relation of inhibitory types with fluid intelligence. This inquiry is especially important during the first school years, since in this stage, inhibitory processes would already be differentiated, and inhibitory processes and fluid intelligence are linked to the performance of children in the school setting. For these reasons, the goal of this work is to study the relation and contribution of perceptual, cognitive, and response inhibition with fluid intelligence, in children in the first years of primary school. For that purpose, a sample of children from six to eight years old (N = 178) was tested with a perceptual inhibition task (perception of similarities and differences task); a cognitive inhibition task (proactive interference task); a response inhibition task (stop signal task); and a fluid intelligence task (progressive matrices task). We observed significant correlations between perceptual and response inhibition and fluid intelligence (controlling for age), but only perceptual inhibition explains significantly part of the performance in the fluid intelligence task. This study provides data about the specific contribution, during childhood, of an inhibitory type to fluid intelligence and contributes empirical evidence in support of the non-unitary approach of inhibition.

Oral narrative production develops dramatically from 3 to 5 years of age, and is a key factor in a child's ability to communicate about the world. Concomitant with this are developments in executive function (EF). For example, executive attention and behavioral inhibition show marked development beginning around 4 years of age. Both EF and oral narrative abilities have important implications for academic success, but the relationship between them is not well understood. The present paper utilizes a cross-lagged design to assess convergent and predictive relations between EF and narrative ability. As a collateral measure, we collected a Language Sample during 10 min of free play. Language Sample did not share significant variance with Narrative Production, thus general language growth from Wave 1 to Wave 2 cannot account for the predictive relations between EF and Narrative. Our findings suggest that although EF and Narrative ability appear independent at each Wave, they nevertheless support each other over developmental time. Specifically, the ability to maintain focus at 4 years supports subsequent narrative ability and narrative ability at 4 years supports subsequent facility and speed in learning and implementing new rules.

El 13 de septiembre de 1848, un trabajador que construía la vía de ferrocarriles Rutland & Burlington en Vermont llamado Phineas Gage sufrió un accidente laboral. Gage dirigía un grupo de trabajo que estaba volando rocas para la construcción de la vía. Para ello preparaba las detonaciones perforando un agujero en la roca, añadiendo explosivos, un detonador, arena y terminar compactando esta carga con una barra de hierro. Gage estaba realizando estas tareas cuando se creó una chispa al contacto entre el hierro y la roca que provocó la explosión de la pólvora, expeliendo la barra fuera del agujero, la cual, atravesó el cráneo de Gage entrando por el lado izquierdo de la cara pasando por detrás del ojo y saliendo por la parte superior de la cabeza. Sorprendentemente, Gage no solo sobrevivió al accidente, también se mantuvo totalmente consciente durante el trayecto hasta el médico más cercano que constató que podía mantenerse erguido, caminar y hablar, por lo que al principio se consideró como un milagro médico. Sin embargo, poco tiempo después los problemas asociados a la lesión que padeció Gage se hicieron visibles, una persona educada, organizada (Gage hasta la lesión era el responsable del grupo de detonación de rocas) se convirtió en una persona incapaz de mantener un trabajo, abandonándolos a los pocos meses, de tener discusiones constantes con sus familiares y compañeros de trabajo, y tener ataques de ira, y conductas inapropiadas o consideradas extrañas en público. A pesar del cambio de conducta, Gage consiguió mejorar a través de un proceso de rehabilitación y trabajar en una finca o como chofer profesional. Finalmente, Gage murió a los 38 años de edad por problemas epilépticos asociados al tejido cicatricial posterior a la lesión sufrida. Si bien el estudio de su caso supone un punto de inflexión en el campo de la Neurología ya que se pasó de la creencia de que el córtex prefrontal era un lóbulo silente, carente de funcionalidad a los supuestos actuales los cuales asumen que los lóbulos prefrontales son cruciales en la regulación emocional, la conducta, la personalidad y las funciones ejecutivas, marcando el inicio de la investigación de esta región cerebral y el inicio de la relación entre lóbulo prefrontal y funciones ejecutivas.
