Modelling Nitromethane Combustion

Abstract: In combustion research, nitromethane is an important nitro-compounded liquid propellant offering high performance. Additionally it can be used as a model substance for understanding mechanisms of combustion of solid propellants. The objectives of investigations were the burning behaviour and the¯ame spectrum in the UVaVIS spectral range because of the appearance of strong radical emissions also present in¯ames of other energetic materials. The evaluation is based on a detailed chemical kinetics and a linear co… Show more

“…Up to now, a lot of works have made a contribution to the study of nitromethane as one component of liquid explosives [1][2][3][4] and propellants [5][6][7], and obtained a good knowledge of the characteristics of its combustion and explosion. Some works have also paid attention to the explosion process of gas-liquid two-phase and gas-liquid-solid three-phase within the pipe with a large length diameter ratio [8].…”

“…It was used as a model substance for understanding combustion mechanism of solid propellants [3]. The understanding of the NM flame structure and burning behavior is believed to further enhance the understanding of the hexogen (RDX) [4] and nitro compound flames.…”

“…In contrast, studies pertaining to the combustion process of NM are scarce [4,8], despite few previous studies on its pyrolysis [9][10][11][12][13] and oxidation [14]. The initial step of the decomposition of NM is generally accepted as the rupture of C-N bond, forming CH 3 and NO 2 [3,9,11]. Perche et al studied the pyrolysis of NM with gas chromatography over the temperature range of 676-771 K and detected the final products as H 2 , H 2 O, CH 4 , C 2 H 6 , CH 3 OH, CO, CO 2 , CH 2 O, HCN, N 2 and NO [10].…”

“…In the gaseous phase, in addition to the heat¯ow, the diffusion of three species is allowed. CTEM was successfully applied to the ignition and combustion of nitromethane and the response of a nitramine propellant to energy pulses from external sources (16,18,21) . Figures 1 and 2 show the response on a heat¯ux absorbed at the surface ( Figure 1) and in the interior of the propellant (Figure 2).…”
