The problem of “gully erosion” is one of the severe “natural hazards” associated with large‐scale land degradation in various parts of the world. Therefore, accurate modelling is one of the crucial responsibilities in this study on gully erosion. But there are still a lot of gaps in our knowledge of gully erosion and its consequences. Particularly at the regional to continental scale, this is true. Gullying is hence often forgotten about in regulation and watershed management plans. The scientific community is becoming increasingly interested in gully erosion, yet many information gaps still need to be filled. In this research, we are trying to fill the mentioned gap with the help of the existing literature. Most gully erosion research has been done to estimate the susceptible zones and ultimately select the best model. In this research, a test application has been made by considering some important models. Then the “vulnerability assessment” was done with the help of “gully erosion, climate‐induced chemical weathering and socio‐economic variables” at the village level. The village‐level information has been used to determine the vulnerability in this region. This information is beneficial for future researchers to conduct gully erosion research in various parts of the world.

A pesquisa apresenta o resultado do monitoramento das voçorocas existentes na área urbana da cidade de Rio Preto da Eva (AM), a caracterização do ambiente no entorno das incisões e o acompanhamento da expansão destas a partir de imagens de alta resolução espacial oriundas do veículo aéreo não tripulado (VANT). Assim, por meio das imagens geradas, foi possível calcular as taxas de erosão linear, fazer previsões de risco para cada incisão e estimar os danos materiais e os possíveis custos de contenção para cada incisão. Ao final, três voçorocas foram encontradas no perímetro urbano de Rio Preto da Eva. A primeira foi descrita como tendo forma bifurcada, tipo conectada, área de abrangência de 716,56 m2, volume erodido de 7.667,19 m3 e danos materiais de R$ 32.424,34; a segunda tinha forma retangular, tipo conectada, área de abrangência de 4.232,33 m2, volume erodido de 94.804,19 m3 e danos materiais de R$ 98.190,05; e a terceira apresentava forma retangular, tipo conectada, área de abrangência de 1.168,31 m2, volume erodido de 20.795,91 m3 e danos materiais de R$ 38.764,52. As 3 incisões provocaram, além da perda de área (6.117,20 m2) e do volume erodido (123.267,29 m3), o assoreamento dos canais a jusante. Os danos em termos reais relativos à área somam R$ 169.378,91, ou US$ 32.953,09, sendo que os custos de contenção totalizaram R$ 1.886.544,48 ou US$ 367.032 em 31 de agosto de 2021. Portanto, do ponto de vista ambiental e financeiro, as medidas preventivas seriam mais econômicas e viáveis, evitando, assim, o surgimento dessas voçorocas.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and structure‐from‐motion (SfM) photogrammetry are prevalent erosion monitoring techniques. However, their relative performance for field erosion monitoring remained unclear. In the study, five souring experiments were implemented on each of the three plots, consisting of hillslope and gully area, established on field slopes. The input flow for three hillslopes was 25, 55, and 85 L min−1 respectively while that for the gully area was 10 L min−1. TLS and SfM were used to monitor erosion processes, while their performance was assessed using manual measurements. Results showed that TLS and SfM produced generally sound and comparable soil loss estimates, with relative errors (REm) for the cumulative and consecutive sediment yield derived by the two techniques being −24.10% to +84.50% and −29.60% to +73.10% respectively. TLS estimated sediment yield more accurately than SfM for more intensively eroded areas, while the estimation accuracy of TLS was lower than SfM for less intensively eroded areas. On gully slopes, the two techniques broadly captured the spatial pattern of erosion and deposition, with inconsistency/errors emerging on areas with small topographic changes or caves; TLS generally produced more accurate rill length than SfM, with the REm for TLS being −2.18% to −0.16% and the REm for SfM being −7.09% to −1.49% respectively. TLS‐ and SfM‐derived rill networks were broadly consistent (Kappa coefficient was 0.42–0.79) and different in details. The SfM‐ and TLS‐derived level of detection was generally at the same order of magnitude. However, their spatial pattern on hillslopes was rather different, which informed a different erosion monitoring capacity of TLS and SfM on field hillslopes and needs further study. Overall, SfM provides a cost‐effective and powerful alternative to TLS for field erosion monitoring and a combined use of them may produce more satisfactory results.
