A new DC/AC inverter with ability of supplying two AC loads, independently, based on flying-capacitor topology is proposed. Flying capacitor enables the converter to have three-level output voltages which results in high-quality output waveforms. Comparing to conventional flying capacitor inverter (FCI) for supplying two loads, the new inverter has lower numbers of semiconductor switches and flying capacitors, up to 25 and 50%, respectively. Comparing to recent works, proposed inverter provides better trade-off between number of components and independent control of loads. Three-phase topology of the proposed inverter consists of three parallel single-phase modules. The inverter can operate in both constant and variable output frequencies. A switched model along with an effective control strategy based on Karnauph Map is also derived for the proposed inverter. High performance of the inverter is verified with both simulation and experimental results. The proposed inverter can mostly be used in applications, such as motor drive, UPS systems, hybrid electric vehicles, and photovoltaic (PV) systems.

This paper deals with the detailed review and comparative analysis of latest reduced switch multilevel inverter topologies for electric vehicle applications. The recent trends in reduced‐switch multilevel inverters are discussed. Detailed review of the reduced‐switch multilevel inverter topologies, their merits and demerits, and the comparative analysis based on component count, total harmonic distortion, and efficiency are conducted. This paper gives a detailed review of recent trends in reduced‐switch multilevel inverter topologies for electric vehicle applications. Switching pattern of the topologies is provided for better understanding of the inverter operation. Comparative analysis of the reduced‐switch inverter topologies based on the component count, total harmonic distortion of output voltage, and efficiency is also presented in this paper. Based on the comparative analysis, it is observed that the interleaved nine‐level flying capacitor multilevel inverter topology achieved the lowest output voltage distortion of 1.6%, which is within the acceptable limits of IEEE 519‐2014 standard. It is observed that the three‐level active neutral point clamped multilevel inverter topology achieved the highest working efficiency of 99.4%. This paper discusses the most recent trends in reduced‐switch multilevel inverters. A comprehensive review of the recent publications and a crisp comparative analysis of the different inverter configurations based on component count, harmonic distortion of output voltage, and efficiency are presented in this paper.

The work presented in this paper deals with a proposal of a new topology of a multilevel inverter to act as a Static synchronous Compensator (STATCOM). The proposed inverter is the five-level Asymmetric Stacked Multi-Level Inverter (ASMLI). One of the essential features of this inverter that distinguishes it from the conventional types is that it achieves the required voltage levels with fewer switching devices, leading to simplifying the control process. Moreover, the work includes using a Finite Control Set Model Predictive Current Control (FCS-MPCC) to control the proposed structure. The FCS-MPCC control strategy performs the finite optimization process at the current sampling instant to provide the optimum switching states to the inverter at the next sampling instant. Therefore, this control strategy allows injecting harmonic current and reactive power compensation to reduce source current distortion and improve the voltage profile and power factor. The optimization mechanism reduces the cost function, which is a function of measuring the network current's deviation from the reference value and how the capacitor voltage deviates from the required values. LCL-filter was used to connect this setup to the grid, and its resonance was actively damped using the multivariable capabilities of the FCS-MPCC. The proposed control framework was simulated using MATLAB/Simulink 9.1 environment and tested in a distorted and healthy network compared to a conventional two-level converter with RL-filter. The STATCOM was used to inject reactive power to raise the source power factor to unity and reduce source current harmonics by injecting harmonic current. The proposed prototype could absorb 70% of source current harmonics, which is nearly 25% better than a conventional inverter, inject an appropriate amount of reactive power, and raise the source power factor to unity in two case scenarios. The performance achieved was promising at steady-state operation and speedy response during transients with balanced capacitors voltages.
