Modeling congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis using computational fluid dynamics

Abstract: CFD analysis can be performed on airways of neonates with nasal obstruction, such as in CNPAS. A CFD model may help characterize severity of airway obstruction as it can predict the three-dimensional pattern of airflow. Determining the role of CFD in clinical management of CNPAS requires further investigation.

“…The clinical benefit of imaging is most apparent in cases refractory to conservative interventions, as the predictive value of imaging regarding surgery is limited 4 . As the effective portion of stenosis may not be restricted to the pyriform rim, 7 development of multifactorial measurement of the nasal architecture is hoped to offer some promise of diagnostic accuracy and treatment prediction 10 …”

“…Moreover, the availability of computational resources for solving numerical algorithm also makes it possible to govern equations using a specific numerical method [47] . The combination of conventional coupled CFD-DEM model is also able to solve fluidstructure interaction (FSI) problems.…”
