Model-independent properties and cosmological implications of the dilaton and moduli sectors of 4D strings

Abstract: We show that if there is a realistic 4-d string, the dilaton and moduli supermultiplets will generically acquire a small mass ∼ O(m 3/2 ), providing the only vacuum-independent evidence of low-energy physics in string theory beyond the supersymmetric standard model. The only assumptions behind this result are (i) softly broken supersymmetry at low energies with zero cosmological constant, (ii) these particles interact with gravitational strength and the scalar components have a flat potential in perturbation t… Show more

“…Such an inflationary regime would iron out any wrinkles in the two large extra dimensions as well as from the four dimensions we see, effectively removing the dangerous KK modes from the initial conditions of the later Universe. It would also dilute otherwise the influence of the problematic moduli generically responsible for the Cosmological Modulus Problem [66][67][68]. A viable cosmology could follow if this is followed by a reheat on the SM brane to temperatures not too far above nucleosynthesis temperatures, with the explanation for dark matter (and possibly baryons) potentially arising as relics from the reheating process.…”

“…For the intermediate scale, the volume modulus τ 5 is relatively light. Its mass does not present a problem with fifth force experiments but may be problematic in a cosmological context [101,102]. Finally, for TeV scale gravity all moduli are very light.…”

“…This issue is also crucial to understand all the main features of the low-energy effective field theory, since both the gauge and the Yukawa couplings depend on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the moduli. There is also a cosmological constraint over the moduli masses, m mod ≥ 10 TeV, so that they decay before baryogenesis evading the cosmological moduli problem [63,64,65].…”
