Abstract: Mode-locking of CW dye lasers are described. Three different methods: active mode-locking by acoustic loss modulation, pumping with mode-locked pulses and passive mode-locking by a saturable absorber, all resulted in stable continuous trains of tunable mode-locked pulses of various duration. I n h a l tsiibersic h t . Unter der Bedingung, deD die transversalen Relaxationszeiten der Medien sehr kurz, hingegen die longitudinalen sehr lang gegeniiber der Impulsdauer sind, wird die Entwicklung eines Impulses in einem Ringresonator mit Verstiirker und Absorber bei kontinuierlichem Pumpen untersucht. Es werden dusdrucke fur hohe und niedrige stationare Energien angegeben und die Bedingungen fur einen stabilen Einimpulsbetrieb aufgestellt. Aus ihnen ergibt sich u. a. die maximale Lknge des Resonators. Die Ubertragbarkeit dieser Ergebnisse auf einen linearen Resonator wird gepruft. Wir bestimmen ferner Flankensteilheit und Halbwertsbreite von Impulsen, deren Form nach einem Resonatorumlauf unveriindert ist. Hieran schlieDt sich eine Betrachtung der Impulskompression an.A b s t r a c t . The evolution of a pulse in a ring resonator containing a cpntinuously pumped amplifier and a saturable absorber is investigated, assuming the transversal relaxation times are very short and the longitudinal relaxation times are very long with respect to the pulse duration. Expressions for high and low steady-state energies and conditions for the single pulse regime are given. From these conditions a maximum resonator length can be calculated. An analogous length of the linear resonator is deduced. Moreover, we determine the halfwidth and the steepening of the edges of pulses which are unchanged after a resonator round trip. I n the last part we consider the pulse compression.
