Abstract: Mitochondria serve a primary role in energy maintenance but also function to govern levels of mitochondria-derived reactive oxygen species (mROS). ROS have long been established to play a critical role in tumorigenesis and are now considered to be integral to the regulation of diverse signaling networks that drive proliferation, tumor cell survival and malignant progression. mROS can damage DNA, activate oncogenes, block the function of tumor suppressors and drive migratory signaling. The mitochondrion's oxida… Show more

“…For example, transgenic mice lacking SOD2 suffer severe cardiopulmonary and neurological damage (Misawa et al, 2006; Li et al, 1995). Conversely, SOD2 overactivity has been linked to increased invasiveness of tumor metastasis (Idelchik et al, 2017; Konzack and Kietzmann, 2014; Hemachandra et al, 2015). Since accumulation of superoxide (O 2 •− ) radical, particularly inside the mitochondria, is often considered as an initial step in the pathogenesis of these diseases, the control of SOD2 activity is therefore critical for maintaining the balance between cell survival and proliferation.…”

“…Several studies demonstrated that ROS generation play important role in the induction of apoptosis under both physiologic and pathologic conditions [3, 4, 9]. To investigate whether apoptosis induced by MB is related with ROS generation, we measured ROS product using lucigenin derived chemiluminescence.…”

“…The resulting enhanced ROS in turn induces tumor cell death through either ROS no-specific damaging or by specific induction of apoptosis via death signaling pathways [8]. In this regard, a fine tuning of intracellular ROS signaling may effectively deprive cells from ROS-induced tumor promoting events, instead re-direct the balance to ROS-induced apoptotic signaling in cancer cells [4, 9]. …”

“…The role of MnSOD and its changes in gene expression during tumorigenicity in several cancer cell lines have been areas of intense investigation in the last decades; these studies have been reviewed in recent years [48,49,51]. In human bladder cancer, however, such information is quite limited.…”
