Abstract: Abstract. Cryptic species and lineages characterize Anopheles nuneztovari s.l. Gabaldón, an important malaria vector in South America. We investigated the phylogeographic structure across the range of this species with cytochrome oxidase subunit I ( COI ) mitochondrial DNA sequences to estimate the number of clades and levels of divergence. Bayesian and maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analyses detected four groups distributed in two major monophyletic clades (I and II). Samples from the Amazon Basin were clust… Show more

“…goeldii were found in the highest number of sites (39.5% and 36.8%, respectively), consistent with their wide distribution across Latin America. 20,30 Albitarsis Complex members had lower distributions overall, but had relatively high incidences (36-55%, Table 1) when evaluated among sites within their known distributions.…”

“…29 These species are hypothesized to be sympatric in some regions of northern South America. 30 The vector status of An. goeldii, originally described as zoophilic and exophilic, 31 warrants further assessment because of its very close genetic association with An.…”

“…However, for the other loci in disequilibrium we cannot completely rule out the possibility that such deviations may be a result of population subdivision (the Wahlund effect) in the sample from Manaus. This hypothesis arose from analyses of the COI gene (Scarpassa and Conn, 2011), which revealed 2 sympatric well-supported clades in samples from Manaus, suggesting 2 sympatric genetic lineages or species.…”

“…Although the status of A. goeldii as a malaria vector has not yet been clarified in the Brazilian Amazon region because it is predominantly zoophagic, it is likely to be a local malaria vector or a secondary vector (which can contribute to malaria transmission, but cannot sustain it without the presence of a primary vector). A. dunhami is morphologically and genetically closely related to A. nuneztovari s.s. and A. goeldii (Lounibos et al, 1998;Trindade and Scarpassa, 2002) and has a large area of overlap with A. goeldii (Scarpassa and Conn, 2011). However, A. dunhami has not been found to be infected with the malaria parasite.…”
