Micronutrient status of Indian population

Abstract: Micronutrients play an important role in the proper growth and development of the human body and its deficiency affects the health contributing to low productivity and vicious cycle of malnutrition, underdevelopment as well as poverty. Micronutrient deficiency is a public health problem affecting more than one-fourth of the global population. Several programmes have been launched over the years in India to improve nutrition and health status of the population; however, a large portion of the population is stil… Show more

“…The contribution of maternal nutritional status and dietary intake to growth faltering may be far more important than is currently assumed. It is important to note that pre-existing deficiencies are common, as ∼20% of Indian mothers have a low BMI and ∼50% exhibit anemia and other micronutrient deficiencies ( 5 , 11 ). Lactation increases nutritional demands, and this may further exacerbate the gaps in the nutrient adequacy of Indian mothers ( 12 ).…”

“…Zinc deficiency is not only a public health problem in developing countries like Nepal, but recent data from some developed countries such as Japan and New Zealand also report a higher burden of zinc deficiency (Daniels et al, 2018;Yasuda & Tsutsui, 2016). We didn't find nationally representative data from India on zinc deficiency, a neighbouring country of Nepal that share similar socio-cultural and food practices (Gonmei& Toteja, 2018). However, several studies from various regions of India report that prevalence of zinc deficiency were high (43.8%) in 6-60 months children and about 53% in non-pregnant women (Kapil & Jain, 2011;Menon et al, 2011).…”

“…20 According to surveys conducted by NFHS 2 and 3, NNMB and ICMR over 70% of preschool children, pregnant women and adolescent girls are anemic. [21][22][23][24] Iron sucrose has been the standard of care for parenteral iron therapy for treatment of anemia in pregnancy. However, the main disadvantage of iron sucrose is the need for multiple visits to deliver the required iron dose, while FCM can be administered in a larger amount at a time.…”
