Abstract: Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the etiologic agent of swine enzootic pneumonia. However other mycoplasma species and secondary bacteria are found as inhabitants of the swine respiratory tract, which can be also related to disease. In the present study we have performed a total DNA metagenomic analysis from the lungs of pigs kept in a field condition, with suggestive signals of enzootic pneumonia and without any infection signals to evaluate the bacteria variability of the lungs microbiota. Libraries from metageno… Show more

“…The lung microbiota is a complex variety of microbes found in the lower respiratory tract, and some lung microbes may play important roles in keeping lung or body health (Villena et al ., ; Khailova et al ., ). More recently, a preliminary overview of swine lung microbiome was provided by investigation of two lung lavage pools using a total DNA shotgun metagenomic analysis (Siqueira et al ., ). Niederwerder () made a review about the microbiome role in swine respiratory disease.…”

“…A recent metagenomic analysis of community composition (Siqueira et al ., ) has described that M. hyopneumoniae is by far the most prevalent species in both healthy and diseased hosts. The difficult isolation of Mycoplasma species from diseased lung extracts is due to the fact that, in culture, fast‐growing bacteria will overcome the slow‐growth of mycoplasmas (McKean et al ., ).…”

“…Several bacteria colonize the respiratory tract of swine. Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae , Mycoplasma flocculare and Mycoplasma hyorhinis are some of the most important species identified so far (Mare and Switzer, ; Meyling and Friis, ; Rose et al ., ; Siqueira et al ., ).…”
