Abstract: 1,3-Propanediol (1,3-PD) can be produced from glycerol by Klebsiella pneumoniae under micro-aerobic conditions. Recently, this fed-batch fermentation process has been successfully scaled up to 1 m(3). The final 1,3-PD concentration, molar yield and volumetric productivity of 72 g l(-1), 57% and 2.1 g l(-1 )h(-1), respectively, are close to those of 75 g l(-1), 61%, and 2.2 g l(-1 )h(-1) under anaerobic conditions. This process would be suitable for the production of 1,3-PD on a large scale.

“…Specifically, we achieved a 1,3-PD yield of 104.4 g/liter, a productivity of 2.61 g/liter/h, and a conversion rate of glycerol to 1,3-PD of 90.2% (g/g). Other cases involving anaerobic fermentation with glycerol as the sole carbon source have reported lower 1,3-PD concentrations of 70.4 g/liter (for Clostridium butyricum) and 70 to 78 g/liter (for Klebsiella pneumoniae) (14,22). Furthermore, the productivities and the conversion rates of glycerol to 1,3-PD in these systems were less than 1.57 g/liter/h and less than 75% (g/g), respectively (7,25,39).…”

“…These by-product products are synthetized in the oxidative branch of glycerol metabolic pathway (Zeng and Biebl, 2002). The Clostridium strains growing on glycerol typically produce a variety of metabolic end-products, such as n-butanol, 1,3-PD, ethanol, acetic acid, butyric acid, and succinic acid (Biebl et al, 1999;Biebl, 2001;Biebl et al, 2002;Liu et al, 2007;Zhang et al, 2007;Kubiak et al, 2012). All these by-products are associated with a loss in 1,3-PD relative to acetic acid, in particular ethanol and butanol, which do not contribute to the NADH 2 pool at all (Zeng and Biebl, 2002).…”

Recently, 1,3-PD has also been used as a monomer to synthesize a new type of polyester -polytrimethylene terephthalate (Biebl et al, 1999;Zeng and Biebl, 2002;Liu et al, 2007;Zhang et al, 2007).…”

“…This might have been due to a lack of oxygen supply when the cell density increased, causing a continuation of the metabolism of glycerol through the reductive branch under microaerobic conditions. Although fed-batch cultivations of different K. pneumoniae strains resulted in 1,3-propanediol concentrations of over 70 g/ liter (45,46), processes with S. blattae could lead to similar 1,3-propanediol concentrations, as S. blattae converts glycerol at a similar molar ratio to 1,3-propanediol when cultivated anaerobically. Further alterations of the current process could therefore potentially result in considerable yields of two products.…”
