“…The second concerns PEG degradation byproducts, such as formate, and the need to compare sonolytically generated formate levels to those reported in the literature that could elicit toxicity and/or a deleterious biological response. In the case of formate, this is a particular concern for ocular cells, such as those in the retina, optic nerve, and basal ganglia, which are quite sensitive due to their limited ability to metabolize it [ 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 ].
