This study attempted to investigate the use of nanomagnetic activated carbon prepared from walnut shell and rice husk wastes for removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution via application of ANN and design expert as adsorbent preparation design and optimization tools. The novel adsorbent was characterized using SEM, FTIR, EDS and BET. The result from 2-level factorial design expert revealed 78.58% Cd(II) sorption efficiency could be achieved for adsorbent prepared at optimum calcination temperature, calcination time, SS-RH mixing ratio and magnetite loading of 859.20 °C, 2.32 h, 2.54 and 5.56 wt% respectively. Sensitivity analysis by both proposed methodologies revealed calcination temperature as most influential factor in adsorbent preparation. Average relative errors and R 2 values of 1.2931% and 4.806%; and 0.9967 and 0.9055 obtained respectively for developed ANN model with 4-9-1 architecture and 2-level factorial design expert revealed ANN model as better prediction and optimization tool for Cd(II) sorption using NM-WS-RH-AC. Laboratory analysis revealed presence of –OH, –NH and COO − groups on adsorbent surface; presence of Cd(II) after adsorption; change in adsorbent textural and morphological structure after Cd(II) adsorption; and increase in its surface area and average pore diameter due to magnetization. Average relatively stable desorption strength of 62.74% towards Cd(II) was exhibited by adsorbent for four consecutive cycles using 0.1M HNO 3 . Prepared adsorbent is effective in removing Cd(II) from solution than commercial activated carbon with economically viable regeneration attribute.

A Dicobalt Coordination Complex with a Short Cobalt‐Cobalt Distance

The existence of a metal‐metal bond in organometallic and coordination complexes is a very important aspect. Metal‐carbonyl, carbene‐metal‐carbonyl and metal‐carbene complexes were studied for having this feature. Herein, an air stable dark green color dicobalt coordination complex [Co(III)2(hep)3(N3)3] (1) [hepH = 2‐(2‐ethylhydroxy)pyridine] with three μ‐alkoxide bridges has been synthesized and characterized by X‐ray single crystal diffraction, NMR and UV/vis spectroscopy. Complex 1 has a short Co⋅⋅⋅Co distance (2.595(6) Å) and thus it has been studied by theoretical calculations. QTAIM (quantum theory of atoms in molecules) as well as EDA‐NOCV analysis (energy decomposition analysis ‐ natural orbitals for chemical valence) do not indicate any significant metal‐metal interaction. The bonding in 1 can be best represented by the interaction of two alkokxy bridged valence electrons fragment Co(III)(hep)2N3 (3d6) with Co(III)(hep)(N3)2 (3d6) where the donation of the lone pair of electrons from three bridging Ohep‐atoms stabilizes the dinuclear Co(III) complex. Additionally, thermolysis of 1 at 550 oC led to the formation sponge like Co3O4 oxide.

Magnetic Nanocomposites as Efficient Sorption Materials for Removing Dyes from Aqueous Solutions

Magnetic composite sorbents based on saponite clays with different content of magnetite (2–7 wt%.) were synthesized. The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction methods, and it was found that the Fe3O4 in composites is in the nanorange. It has been shown that the magnetic nanocomposites have more developed microporosity and mesoporosity compared to saponite clay. The sorption properties of magnetic nanocomposite sorbents were determined, and the results evidenced that their efficiency is significantly higher than the individual phases of the composite. It was shown that all waste composite magnetic sorbents are successfully removed from the water environment by magnetic separation.
