Methodological quality and synthesis of case series and case reports

Abstract: Case reports and case series are uncontrolled study designs known for increased risk of bias but have profoundly influenced the medical literature and continue to advance our knowledge. In this guide, we present a framework for appraisal, synthesis and application of evidence derived from case reports and case series. We propose a tool to evaluate the methodological quality of case reports and case series based on the domains of selection, ascertainment, causality and reporting and provide signalling questions… Show more

“…The evaluation tool presented by Murad and colleagues1 provides an accessible system for judging components of methodological quality in published case reports and series. Whereas the authors observe that their leading explanatory questions in the domain of causality are mostly applicable to drug-related adverse events, it is worth noting that additional, more generalisable factors have been identified.…”

“…Narrative syntheses, as described by Murad and colleagues,1 enable interpretation within the metacausal (‘vertical’) dimension of the system, where insights into the ‘working principles’ of pathogenesis or pharmacology are obtained through cognitional assessment. For the causal (‘horizontal’) dimension, relationships will in most cases accord with the authors’ concept of causal gestalt correspondence , wherein cause and effect are not unified but appear intimately linked 2.…”
