Method for the Estimation of the Past Illegal Dumping Recorded in a Sediment Core

Abstract: Heavy metal concentrations of the acidsoluble fraction in sediment core samples from Nagaike, a reservoir in Osaka City, Japan, were measured by ICP-MS following the microwave extraction method. Spiked peaks for several metals in the sediment core samples were observed around 1960. The results of correlation coefficient study and cluster analysis of heavy metal concentrations in the sediment core samples showed that some metals, such as Cr, Cd, Ni and Cu, in the period of the spiked peak were derived from the … Show more

“…1 It is very important to understand the distributions of the dumping of wastes and the quantification of pollutants loaded into the environment by them in order to develop strategies for the dumping of wastes. 2 In this study, we focused on waste dumped on roadside, which is called 'poi-sute' waste in Japanese.…”

“…Since sediment porosity is expected to decrease with depth due to compaction, we corrected the depth of the core from water content using models provided by Robbinsa and Edgington (1975) and Matsumoto (1975). Based on the above benchmark of deposition age, the dating of the core samples was obtained using the depth profile of 210 Pb activities (Katahira et al, 2007) ( Figure 3). The depth of 422-442 cm, with high 239+240 Pu and 137 Cs activities derived from the atomic bomb, corresponded to 1944-1949.…”

“…The microwave extraction method, complying with EPA method 3051a, was used for the digestion of the sediment core samples, as discussed in previous reports (Katahira et al, 2007;Katahira et al, 2009). Sediment samples of 0.50 g each were placed in vessels with 10 mL of nitric acid (Kanto Chemical Co., Inc., ultrapur grade) and were digested in a closed microwave digestion system.…”

“…2). The method of age determination has been described in some papers (e.g.,Yasuhara and Yamazaki 2005;Katahira et al 2007) in detail. The 210 Pb profiles in the upper part of each sediment core almost fit to the decay curve calculated from a half-life of 210 Pb, and the 137 Cs activities in each sediment core are consistent with the historical trends of the annual fallout(National Institute of Radiological Sciences 1963-1989, indicating that the 210 Pb ages after 1950 (Koike Pond and Nagasaki Bay) or 1970 (Huairou Reservoir) are very reliable.…”
