Method for evaluation via benchmarking of the lean product development process

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe benchmarking to evaluate the product development process (PDP) from a lean perspective. Design/methodology/approach – The work was conducted by means of case studies at large companies in Brazil that develop products, based on a gap in the literature involving a lack of indicators to diagnose how lean are PDPs considering the principles and practices of the lean approach. … Show more

“…According to Bhutta and Huq (1999), benchmarking is the process of identifying the highest standards of excellence for products, services, or processes, and then taking the necessary actions to reach those standards. In recent years, growing competitiveness and the increasing popularity of LM has demanded its benchmarking (Dal Forno et al, 2016). This is because, according to Knuf (2000), it is difficult to recognize the embracement of LM and where a company stands on this aspect in relation to other organizations (Tomelero et al, 2017).…”

“…In recent years, a handful of studies have explored and considered LB as an approach to drive the improvement of processes (e.g. Tomelero et al, 2017;Dal Forno et al, 2016;Kumar and Kumar, 2016). However, its use to address environmental and sustainability issues has only been attempted by Tomelero et al (2017).…”

“…Furthermore, involving employees in the standardization process is vital for identifying the best way to execute a specific activity. Thus, the assessment process is more precise to everyone through the management of indicators (Forno et al, 2016).…”

“…The processes analysis implies identifying different dimensions of processes: flow, the sequence of activities, waits and cycle duration, data and information, people involved, and relationships between the activities. The macro-processes can be subdivided into micro-processes or groups of activities (Forno et al, 2016). Moreover, the standardization process considers technological, personal and structural aspects.…”

“…Few studies consider lean implementation in new PD (Danese et al, 2018). Dal Forno et al (2016) developed an evaluation method for benchmarking the lean PD process in Brazilian companies. The key limitation of previously mentioned models is neglecting the efficiency of engineering processes (Belvedere et al, 2019).…”
