Metal pollutants have additive negative effects on honey bee cognition

Abstract: Environmental pollutants can exert sublethal deleterious effects on animals. These include disruption of cognitive functions underlying crucial behaviours. While agrochemicals have been identified as a major threat to pollinators, metal pollutants, which are often found in complex mixtures, have so far been overlooked. Here we assessed the impact of acute exposure to field-realistic concentrations of three common metal pollutants, lead, copper, arsenic, and their combinations, on honey bee appetitive learning … Show more

“…can contribute to neurodegeneration, if they are outside their biologic range (Chicas-Mosier et al, 2017). In addition, combined eff ects of co-exposure to diff erent metals can also occur (Monchanin et al, 2021). Th e non-essential elements (lead, cadmium, mercury) can be toxic even in a trace amount.…”

“…In natural feeding areas, most of Pb is found on the surface of bee bodies (Sadowska et al, 2019). Pb negatively aff ects bees' immune system -it slows down appetitive learning and reduces long-term memory specifi city (Monchanin et al, 2021).…”

“…Thus, it is not surprising that increasing efforts are being made to fi nd out all putative factors contributing to the decrease in bee populations [2,3]. Environmental pollutants such as agrochemicals [4][5][6] and heavy metals [7,8], together with pathogens [9,10], inadequate fl oral resources [11,12] and incorrect beekeeping practices [2] have been accused of having contributed to the decline in the number of bees. Among pathogens, there are endoparasites capable of compromising bee health and contribute to colony mortality, like microsporidia [13][14][15][16][17] and trypanosomatids [18][19][20], but also viruses [21][22][23][24][25].…”
