Metabolic syndrome and skin: Psoriasis and beyond

Abstract: Metabolic syndrome (Met S) is a clustering of risk factors comprising of abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, and abnormal glucose tolerance. The prevalence of Met S has been increasing in the last few years throughout the world. Psoriasis has consistently been associated with Met S as well as its various components. However, the association is no longer limited to psoriasis alone. Various dermatological conditions such as lichen planus, androgenetic alopecia, systemic lupus erythematosus,… Show more

“…SKO mice displayed significantly increased skin inflammation, evident from increases in expression of inflammatory genes related to psoriasis, tissue damage, and the wound-healing process (36). Although psoriasis is generally associated with obesity (53)(54)(55), the observation of increased markers of wound healing in the skin of SKO mice is potentially significant in explaining the increased energy metabolism in these animals. Wound healing is an extremely energy-intensive process (56 -58).…”

“…Metabolic syndrome is found to be associated with Lichen planus and other dermatological conditions such as psoriasis, skin tags, androgenetic alopecia, acanthosisnigricans, systemic lupus erythematosus. 9 The International Diabetes Federation criteria to define metabolic syndrome has been used in this study.…”

“…The levels of these adipocytokines have been shown to be elevated in many dermatological diseases. 10 Shi-Sheng Zhou has illustrated about another factor namely Oxidative stress is a condition of oxidant/antioxidant imbalance in which the net amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) exceeds the antioxidant capacity of the body. Xenobiotics is one of the major sources of ROS.…”

“…Cytokines like TNF-a, IL-6, intracellular adhesion molecule-1 play a key role in pathogenesis of psoriasis as well as MetS. 6 In recent past many studies have been conducted worldwide to evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in psoriasis.…”
