-Cobalt catalysts supported on γ-alumina, ceria and γ-alumina-ceria, with 10 or 20%wt of cobalt load, prepared by the wet impregnation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), N 2 adsorptiondesorption isotherms (BET/BJH methods), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), O 2 -chemisorption and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) were used to promote the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (n-hexane, benzene, toluene and o-xylene). For a range of low temperatures (50-350 °C), the activity of the catalysts with a higher cobalt load (20% wt) was greater than that of the catalysts with a lower cobalt load (10% wt). The Co/γ-Al 2 O 3 -CeO 2 catalytic systems presented the best performances. The results obtained in the characterization suggest that the higher catalytic activity of the Co 20 /γ-Al 2 O 3 -CeO 2 catalyst may be attributed to the higher metal content and amount of oxygen vacancies, as well as the effects of the interaction between the cobalt and the alumina and cerium oxides.

CO oxidation has been performed on Co 3 O 4 nanobelts and nanocubes as model catalysts. The Co 3 O 4 nanobelts which have a predominance of exposed {011} planes are more active than Co 3 O 4 nanocubes with exposed {001} planes. Temperature programmed reduction of CO shows that Co 3 O 4 nanobelts have stronger reducing properties than Co 3 O 4 nanocubes. The essence of shape and crystal plane effect is revealed by the fact that turnover frequency of Co 3+ sites of {011} planes on Co 3 O 4 nanobelts is far higher than that of {001} planes on Co 3 O 4 nanocubes.

a b s t r a c tShort column SBA-15 supported Pd mesoporous catalysts with controllable acidity and expanded microporosity were firstly prepared through a simple "two-solvents" approach. The catalytic performances of the synthesized catalysts were evaluated for toluene oxidation. The characterization results reveal that Al atoms prefer to be tetrahedrally coordinated in the framework of the synthesized materials, and the acid sites can significantly promote Pd particle dispersion and metallic Pd oxidation due to their electrophilic characters. The Pd-confined catalysts possess high toluene turnover frequencies and toluene can be totally converted to CO 2 and H 2 O below 210 • C. The oxidation reaction can be suppressed by water vapor due to the formation of inactive Pd-hydroxides, and the synthesized catalyst has a good hydrothermal stability and high tolerance to moisture. Both the specific surface area and the toluene adsorption/desorption property are not the main factors determining the catalytic activity. Overall, the toluene oxidation performance is closely related to the support microporosity and acidity, the Pd dispersion and the CO 2 desorption capability.
