The Banded Gneissic Complex of the Aravalli Craton of northwestern India comprises Palaeo‐ to Neoarchaean (3.3–2.7 Ga) gneisses, including tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) gneisses, intruded by Neoarchaean (2.6–2.5 Ga) TTGs, sanukitoids, and potassic granites. The latter include the Malola granite that crops out near Bhilwara and forms the basement for the Mesoproterozoic Pur‐Banera mineralized belt. The granite has experienced three deformation events, represented by an S1 foliation and superimposed open folds and dextral shears. Textural evidence and thermobarometry indicate that prograde metamorphism initially forming actinolite and subsequently diopside, and culminating in the upper amphibolite facies, was followed by retrograde metamorphism in the greenschist facies with fluid influx, forming zoisite. Zircon geochronology yields a crystallization age of 2,538 ± 11 Ma and indicates a prominent metamorphic overprint in the region at 1,307 ± 9 Ma. The Malola granite has low Sr–Nd isotopic ratios, enrichments in fluid‐mobile elements (Cs, Rb, Ba, Th, and Pb), and depletions in alteration‐resistant elements (Nb, Ta, and Ti). These characteristics combined with mineralogical evidence suggest that the granite was derived by anatexis of older crystalline crust (possibly granulitic lower crust) in the same subduction zone setting inferred previously for other Neoarchean granitoids in this region. Geochemical and Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic similarities between the Malola granite and Neoarchaean granitoids of the Aravalli, Bundelkhand, Bastar, Dharwar, and Congo cratons indicate a major role for anatectic crustal reworking in their genesis.

The Banded Gneissic Complex (BGC) of the Aravalli Craton (India) comprises Archean BGC‐I (3.3–2.5 Ga) and Proterozoic BGC‐II. The BGC‐II is a mosaic of amphibolite facies namely, (a) Mangalwar Gneissic Complex (MGC), (b) Mangalwar Metasedimentary Complex (MMC), and (c) granulite‐facies Sandmata Metamorphic Complex. Here we present field, petrography and geochemical study of the Proterozoic amphibolites from the MGC and MMC. Based on field and geochemical data, the amphibolites have been characterized into three types related to rift settings (G1, G2 and G3). The G1 type occurs as dykes in the MGC and bears ocean island basalt‐type rare earth element (REE) patterns along with negative Nb and Ti anomalies, negative to positive values of εNd(t) (−0.02 to +3.96) and slightly variable initial 87Sr/86Sr (ISr) ratios. They are derived from deep mantle sources and correspond to the pre‐rift magmatic phase. The G2 type occurs as isolated patches associated with chert and is characterized by light REE (LREE) depleted and almost flat heavy REE (HREE) patterns suggesting that they were emplaced in an oceanic setting and were derived from a shallower mantle bearing positive εNd(t) (+2.87 to +6.27) and ISr = 0.7002–0.7083. This phase corresponds to the opening of the Mangalwar sedimentary basin (MMC). The G3 type occurs intercalated with metasedimentary rocks of the MMC and marked by LREE‐enriched and HREE‐depleted to flat patterns that resemble Upper Continental Crust signature, their εNd(t) mostly negative values and variable ISr also corroborate this explanation. They are believed to be derived from heterogeneous sources and represent syn‐sedimentary volcanic phases. All these signatures indicate that the amphibolites distinctly represent three phases of magmatism that occurred during pre‐rift (1.72 Ga), opening of basin (1.62 Ga) and syn‐sedimentary volcanism (1.6–1.3 Ga) in the rift‐basin and they were formed during the Proterozoic. These rifting events might have been connected with the fragmentation of Columbia.

Association of A‐ and I‐type granitoids in the central Aravalli orogen, Rajasthan: Implications for the Neoproterozoic tectonic evolution of north‐west India

We present new mineralogical and geochemical data for the granitoid plutons of the Neoproterozoic Sendra Granitoid Suite, central Aravalli orogen, north‐west India to constrain their petrogenesis and tectonic setting. The granitoids can be classified into two groups: (a) A‐type Chang, Chitar, Borwar, and Seliberi plutons and (b) I‐type Jaitpura pluton. The available geochronological data (zircon U–Pb ages) suggest that all the granitoids are coeval at 990–970 Ma. The granitoids are mostly granite sensu stricto, with subordinate granodiorite and rare tonalite. The rocks are metaluminous to mildly peraluminous and have high total REE abundances. Nevertheless, there are also certain geochemical differences between A‐type and I‐type granitoids. The I‐type granitoids have relatively high Al2O3 and CaO concentrations and show significant fractionation with increasing SiO2. The least fractionated sample contains low abundances of the HFSE and has low Fe‐number and Ga/Al ratios. In contrast, the A‐type granitoids have lower CaO and higher HFSE concentrations, Fe‐number, and Ga/Al ratios. Both A‐type and I‐type granitoids show negative Ba, Sr, Nb, P, Ti, and Eu anomalies, and are characterized by high zircon‐saturation temperatures (801–977°C). The present data suggest that rocks of the Sendra Granitoid Suite were generated predominantly by partial melting of mafic sources at high temperatures and emplaced in a post‐collisional extensional regime. Moreover, our study provides evidence of the preserved post‐collisional extensional magmatism subsequent to the subduction during the assembly of the Rodinia supercontinent, which is otherwise relatively less prevalent over intra‐plate or within‐plate magmatism during this time period.
