Since that time the incidence of neurological sequela has decreased to approximately 30% (Ross, 1952), with about 20% reporting significant difficulty in school work (Desmit, 1955;Kresky, Buchbinder, & Greenberg, 1962;Lawson, Metcalfe, & Pampiglione, 1965;Smith, 1954). A recent summary of follow-up studies of postmeningitis children (Sell, 1969) concluded that over 18% suffer from serious lasting sequelae, 7% are mentally retarded, and others manifest neurologic signs such as deafness, hemiplegia, seizures, and speech problems.…”
