“…Since 1956, aqueous twophase systems (ATPS) based on either two incompatible polymers or one polymer and a salt in aqueous solution have proven to be highly suitable for the gentle separation of cell membranes and organelles from crude cell lysates as well as for the selective purification of enzymes from protein mixtures or cell extracts (Agasoster, 1998;Albertsson, 1956Albertsson, , 1986Gunduz, 2000;Rito-Palomares, 2004;Roobol-Boza et al, 2004;Walter and Johansson, 1994). The mild process conditions, as well as the fast phase separation, prevent protein denaturation and enzyme inactivation.…”

“…Another advantage of ATPS is that these systems are suitable for biological samples because each phase contains 70-90% water, which means that biomolecules will not be denatured. ATPS has been used for the separation of biomolecules, such as cells, organelles, membrane fractions and proteins [9][10][11][12][13][14]. Rogers et al [15] reported that ATPS are suitable for the separation of small organic molecules in industrial and environmental application.…”

“…Considering that, stability, activity and enantioselectivity of enzymes have all been enhanced in aqueous solution of ionic liquids (Dreyer & Kragl, 2008;Dreyer and Kragl, 2009) and water-rich phases protect biomolecules against denaturation. ATPS have been used mainly in biotechnology for the separation of biomolecules, such as cells, organelles, membrane fractions and proteins (Walter & Johansson, 1994;Albertsson, 1986;Rito-Palomares, 2004;Gunduz &Tolga, 2004;Roobol-Boza et al, 2004;Agasøster, 1998).This method appears to be an attractive alternative to conventional extraction methods such as liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction, to simultaneously carry out isolation, purification and enrichment of biomolecules (RitoPalomares, 2004;Gunduz & Tolga, 2004;Roobol-Boza et al, 2004). Apart from proteins like bovine serum albumin, lysozyme, trypsin, myoglobin (Pei et al, 2009, Du et al, 2007Dreyer & Kragl, 2008;Dreyer and Kragl, 2009) ATPS have been used for the recovery of small organic and inorganic molecules such as metal ions, radiochemicals, dyes, drug molecules (Huddleston et al, 1999;Willauer et al, 2002;Zhu et al, 2001;Bridges & Rogers, 2008).…”
