Melioidosis Diagnostic Workshop, 20131

Abstract: Melioidosis is a severe disease that can be difficult to diagnose because of its diverse clinical manifestations and a lack of adequate diagnostic capabilities for suspected cases. There is broad interest in improving detection and diagnosis of this disease not only in melioidosis-endemic regions but also outside these regions because melioidosis may be underreported and poses a potential bioterrorism challenge for public health authorities. Therefore, a workshop of academic, government, and private sector per… Show more

“…In the present patient, light microscopy of blood culture revealed bipolar staining with ‘safety pin’–like appearance (Figure 1) and wrinkled appearance of colonies on Ashdown agar growth medium (Figure 2), which are both typical morphologies of B. pseudomallei [9].

“…Organ-specific samples should be collected, for example sputum in pneumonia or aspirate in abscesses. Selective media such as Ashdown agar should be used to grow the cultures [9]. …”

“…[3][4][5][6] South Asia, including Bangladesh, is predicted to bear 44% of the overall burden, as the large populations living here in areas harboring B. pseudomallei. 7 Moreover, the burden of melioidosis in many tropical developing countries like ours is hidden and masked by underdevelopment of microbiological facilities, lack of relevant clinical and laboratory expertise 8 , and poor reporting systems. 7 Furthermore, a delay in diagnosis and treatment with inappropriate antimicrobials may result in case fatality rates exceeding 70%.…”
