“…As a general rule, it is elear that suseeptibility to skin cancer varies inversely as the proportion of melanin in the skin, and many workers have confirmed this view (Everett, Bell and Hagans, 1960 ;Belisario, 1962 ;Carmiehael, 1962 ;Silverstone et al, 1963 ;Freeman and Knox, 1967 ;Gellin, Kopf and Garfinkel, 1969 ;MeGovern and Lane Brown, 1969). There are, however, exeeptions to the general rule that require consideration in determining individual susceptibility, in particular the evenness of spread of melanin and the effect of long-term solar exposure on melanin produetion.…”

“…(2) Melanin Most workers now agree that melanin is the most important protector from UVL (Everett, Bell and Hagans, 1960) and it is claimed that in tropical countries albino members of dark-skinned races usually die from squamous cell carcinoma (McGovern and Lane Brown, 1969). In 1958 it was suggested by the author and V. J. MeGovern (Mackie and McGovern, 1958) that in fair-skinned subjects the limited protective action of melanin occurred in the basal layer, it being believed that melanin only passed to the more superficial layers in dark-skinne(i subjects.…”

“…By this technique, Everett et al demonstrated a decrease in melanin as well as a significantly low tanning response to ultraviolet light in the skin of patients with carcinoma as compared with subjects without cutaneous carcinoma. 12 McGovern, in a study of melanoma with regard to the influence of sunlight and complexion, also concluded that malignant transformation of a mole is more common in the fair-skinned person who does not tan well upon exposure to light, but who freckles readily. 2 In pathological examination of 229 melanoma specimens McGovern and Mackie found that where the melanoma arose in nevi that appeared first in adult life, especially in older females, and were located about the head and neck, the tumor was frequently associated with collagen degeneration of the dermis.…”
