Medicinal plants with gastroprotective potential

Abstract: <p class="Abstract">Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a main source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is characterized by erosions in mucosal linings of stomach and duodenum. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and Helicobacter pylori are mainly responsible for peptic ulcer disease. Histamine receptor blockers and proton pump inhibitors are most prominent therapies in the treatment of peptic ulcer. However, severe adverse effects of NSAIDs have been reported. Therefore, focus is now diverte… Show more

“…Our results were also comparable with previous reports of other natural gastroprotective agents i.e. Acanthus ilicifolius, Anogeissus latifolia, Berberis vulgaris & Argyreia speciose etc [38]. Based upon the findings of the present investigation, it is quite evident that Lavandula stoechas L. extract possessed antimicrobial activity against Proteus mirabilis and also proved effective against ethanol-induced ulcers in animal model.…”

“…Such a lower response at higher dose could be due to 'therapeutic windows' effect of the extract [18]. The gastro-protective effect of Z. abyssinica root could be due to the presence of biological compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins and other polyphenols present in extracts [19,20]. Alkaloids have been shown to possess gastroprotective and ulcer healing activity by inhibiting acid secretion and gastric motility, stimulation of mucus/bicarbonate secretion and increase mucosal blood flow [21].…”

“…Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is one of the main illnesses and deaths around the globe. Mucosal lining erosions in the stomach and duodenum are its hallmarks (Majeed et al 2015 ). Histamine receptor blockers and proton pump inhibitors are the two most often used drugs to treat peptic ulcers.…”
