“…Chamomile had the ability to reduce severity and lesion incidence and improved pain symptomatology. 7 Furthermore, the results of a systematic review by Silva et al demonstrated that different forms of chamomile was effective in the treatment of oral mucositis in cancer patients due to its anti-inflammatory action. 55 Another problem experienced by cancer patients is anxiety and depression related to the disease and the treatment process.…”

“… 5 Although these treatments aim at improving the quality of life of cancer patients, they are associated with many side effects leading to acute symptoms such as mucositis, dermatitis, stomatitis, nausea, vomiting, xerostomia, and skin scaling. 6 , 7 It has been estimated that about 40% of patients are treated with standard chemotherapy develop mucositis. 8 Nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy are among the most severe side effects of the treatment and of the major concerns of patients with cancer, with a prevalence of 54% to 96%.…”

“…The majority of them are easily implementable and low‐cost (Ferreira et al., 2022; Yarom et al., 2020). In addition, nonpharmacological interventions have fewer side effects and have been demonstrated to alleviate oral mucositis effectively (Eubank et al., 2021; Ferreira et al., 2022; Yarom et al., 2020). For example, natural plants, honey, nutritional supplements and probiotics possess various ameliorative properties for oral mucositis, including anti‐inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects and cell proliferation promotion (Liu et al., 2022; Lozano et al., 2021; Yarom et al., 2020); low‐level laser therapy could promote the repair of oral mucosal tissue and reduce the inflammatory response through photon‐generated biochemical reactions (Lai et al., 2021); while health education enhances the awareness and ability of patients to treat oral mucositis, and oral cleaning and wetting agents can decrease the amount of oral bacteria and maintain oral hygiene (Elad et al., 2020).…”

“…Many strategies, such as oral hygiene, sodium bicarbonate, benzydamine hydrochloride rinses, glutamine, growth factor, cytokines, anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics, low-level laser therapy, and cryotherapy [ 4 , 7 ] have been suggested for treating oral mucositis, but none of these strategies are fully effective; moreover, some agents are associated with drug side effects and ancillary costs [ 8 , 9 ]. In addition to being less expensive, more widely available [ 10 ], and having fewer side effects [ 11 ] than synthetic drugs, natural products also show potential in pharmacological laboratory studies and clinical trials for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and wound-healing properties [ 12 ], all of which may have varying degrees of impact on the pathophysiology of mucositis.…”
