Medical phycology 2017

Abstract: In 2014, ISHAM formed a new working group: "Medical Phycology: Protothecosis and Chlorellosis." The purpose of this working group is to help facilitate collaboration and communication among people interested in the pathogenic algae, to share ideas and work together. Here we present reports on recent work we have done in five areas. 1. The history of medical phycology as a branch of science. 2. Aspects of the genetics of Prototheca. 3. Aspects of the proteins of Prototheca. 4. Human infections caused by Prototh… Show more

“…The traditional attitude to the Prototheca species is that they are of low virulence to human beings who have intact immune systems but are threatening to individuals with immunocompetent or immunosuppressed problems. 5 Our report and some other literature hinted that old patients with diabetes mellitus were a group of vulnerable populations and should raise attention, especially when they have exposure risk to the contaminated region. 10,12 So far, the genus Prototheca is composed of at least eight species, like P wickerhamii, P zopfii, P blaschkeae, P cutis, P miyajii, P stagnora, P ulmea, and P tumulicola, all of which present close relationships in the biological phenotype and the genomic background.…”

“…Since Davies first described the infection of Prototheca species in 1964, human protothecosis has spread worldwide, especially in recent years. [4][5][6][7] In our country, cutaneous protothecosis has been reported successively in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. 8,9 Until now, at least two protothecosis cases occurred in Shanghai, China.…”

“…6 Todd et al stated that intravenous AMPH-B was the most effective medication for protothecosis. 7 Only three cases of Prototheca keratitis have been reported. In the first case, a Prototheca infection was detected in a patient after undergone PKP for Fuchs corneal endothelial dystrophy.…”

“…Prototheca wickerhamii represents the predominant etiological agent of human protothecosis, affecting both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients ( Todd et al., 2018 ). Clinically, the disease most frequently involves the skin and subcutaneous tissue followed by articular and disseminated manifestations.…”

“…Clinically, the disease most frequently involves the skin and subcutaneous tissue followed by articular and disseminated manifestations. Treatment of protothecal infections is often difficult due to resistance of the algae to multiple antimicrobial agents ( Lass-Flörl and Mayr, 2007 ; Todd et al., 2018 ).…”
