Mechanism by which Tungsten Oxide Promotes the Activity of Supported V2O5/TiO2 Catalysts for NOX Abatement: Structural Effects Revealed by 51V MAS NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract: The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 to N2 with supported V2O5(‐WO3)/TiO2 catalysts is an industrial technology used to mitigate toxic emissions. Long‐standing uncertainties in the molecular structures of surface vanadia are clarified, whereby progressive addition of vanadia to TiO2 forms oligomeric vanadia structures and reveals a proportional relationship of SCR reaction rate to [surface VOx concentration]2, implying a 2‐site mechanism. Unreactive surface tungsta (WO3) also promote the for… Show more

“…Bulk tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) is composed of WO 6 units that are three-dimensionally connected 33 35 . Furthermore, WO 3 is known as a promoter for supported vanadia catalysts that enhance the reactivity of vanadia sites 36 . Therefore, the incorporation of tungsten sites into bulk V 2 O 5 would facilitate not only the NH 3 -SCR activity but also the structural stability of bulk vanadium oxide-based catalysts.…”

“…The reaction mechanisms of NH 3 -SCR have been widely investigated for a supported vanadium-based oxide catalyst under a dry gas condition using in situ and operando spectroscopic techniques (infrared (IR), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis), Raman) 20 , 36 , 38 , 46 , 50 – 54 . The current consensus is that both Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites participate in the reaction mechanism.…”

“…The worst “offenders” contributing to air pollution are NOx and CO emissions from vehicles/engines. Various technological advances have allowed to decrease the NO emissions from vehicles significantly relying on so‐called “three‐way‐catalysts (TWC)” and, more recently, selectively catalytic reduction technology (SCR) [1, 3–7, 9–11, 32] …”

“…Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is the most commonly used method to remove NO x from flue gas. 5 Research on a low-temperature SCR denitration catalyst started late in China. Although domestic research has made some progress, a certain distance from the industrial application remains.…”
