Mechanical Design and First Engineering Commissioning of ICRF Antenna for EAST

Abstract: A new loop and fold wave-guide ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) antenna with a power output of 3 MW, which can operate at a frequency in the range of 30 MHz to 110 MHz, was designed. The design of key components of the new ICRF antenna and the characters of the new prototype ICRF antenna are presented. The thermo-mechanical analysis of both the Faraday shield and the current straps was conducted, and the stresses due to heat loads are studied in detail with different cooling-water velocities considered… Show more

“…The ICRF system on the EAST [5][6][7] consists of eight transmission lines, each line includes a transmitter [8], liquid stub tuners [9], a decoupler [10,11], and the antenna [12,13] as shown in figure 1. The main diagnostic system in the transmission line includes a directional coupler, the voltage probes array, and the V/I probes array.…”

“…The technique of brazing is more complicated and expensive than the high-pressure expanded tube technique. 3.3 Activation of the passive stabilizer [8,9] The primary function of the passive stabilizers is to stabilize the plasma by eddy currents when vertical displace events (VDEs) occur. For a large plasma current (1 MA) operation, the previous separated up and down passive stabilizers in the low field were proposed to be electrically connected as a saddle loop (Fig.…”

“…All the vacuum transmission lines are made of SS316L. With the aim of removing the heat loads from plasma and RF power loss, four vacuum transmission lines are designed with water-cooled channels with circuits positioned inside the inner conductor [8].…”

“…The moving distance is measured from the origin to the end which are labeled along the moving path. The power station, including two pumps, provides power for the synchronous hydraulic cylinders during the operation [8]. Vacuum feedthrough is one of the key components for ICRF antenna, due to the former vacuum feedthrough with cylinder shape dielectric insulator was small and not accommodated to use in the heating physics experiment with the experiment parameters being higher, a new vacuum feedthrough with taper dielectric ceramic was developed to replace the former one.…”
