Mechanical and thermal properties of poly(butylene succinate)/poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) biodegradable blends

Abstract: Biodegradable polymer blends of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) were prepared with different compositions. The mechanical properties of the blends were studied through tensile testing and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The dependence of the elastic modulus and strength data on the blend composition was modeled on the basis of the equivalent box model. The fitting parameters indicated complete immiscibility between PBS and PHBV and a moderate adhesion… Show more

“…Therefore, an alky chain length of six to eight seems to be needed for the The impact of the alcohol-grafted CNCs on the thermomechanical behavior of PBS was studied using DMA ( Figure 8). The storage modulus and glass transition temperature values of neat PBS are in agreement with the values in the literature [57] (Table 3). Upon the addition of the alcohol-grafted CNCs, an increase of up to two-fold in the storage modulus was observed, which was dependent on the chain length of the grafted alcohol.…”

“…Even an addition of just 10 wt % PBS led to a clear reduction in YM and σ and to a significant increase in permeability ( T m and χ w were not significantly affected). The effect on the mechanical properties is in agreement with the literature . A further increase in the PBS concentration had no further significant effect on the properties.…”
