A vactrain (or vacuum tube high-speed flying train) is considered as a novel proposed rail transportation approach in the ultra-high-speed scenario. The maglev train can run with low mechanical friction, low air resistance, and low noise mode at a speed exceeding 1000 km/h inside the vacuum tube regardless of weather conditions. Currently, there is no research on train-to-ground wireless communication system for vactrain. In this paper, we first summarize a list of the unique challenges and opportunities associated with the wireless communication for vactrain, then analyze the bandwidth and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of vactrain’s train-to-ground communication services quantitatively. To address these challenges and utilize the unique opportunities, a leaky waveguide solution with simple architecture but excellent performance is proposed for wireless coverage for vactrains. The simulation of the leaky waveguide is conducted, and the results show the uniform phase distribution along the horizontal direction of the tube, but also the smooth field distribution at the point far away from the leaky waveguide, which can suppress Doppler frequency shift, indicating that the time-varying frequency-selective fading channel could be approximated as a stationary channel. Furthermore, the train-to-ground wireless access architectures based on leaky waveguide are studied and analyzed. Finally, the moving scheme is adopted based on centralized, cooperative, cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN), so as to deal with the extremely frequent handoff issue.

The integration of satellite and terrestrial communication systems plays a vital role in the fifth‐generation mobile communication system (5G) for the ubiquitous coverage, reliable service, and flexible networking. Moreover, the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication with large bandwidth is a key enabler for 5G intelligent rail transportation. In this paper, the satellite‐terrestrial channel at 22.6 GHz is characterized for a typical high‐speed railway (HSR) environment. The three‐dimensional model of the railway scenario is reconstructed and imported into the Cloud Ray‐Tracing (CloudRT) simulation platform. Based on extensive ray‐tracing simulations, the channel for the terrestrial HSR system and the satellite‐terrestrial system with two weather conditions are characterized, and the interference between them are evaluated. The results of this paper can help for the design and evaluation for the satellite‐terrestrial communication system enabling future intelligent rail transportation.

The high-speed railway (HSR) wireless channel models based on field measurements have poor universality and low modeling accuracy due to the limitations of the experimental methods and the terrain conditions. To overcome this problem, this paper considers the wireless channels in various HSR scenarios (such as tunnels, mountains, viaducts, cuttings and plains) as the research objects and establishes a novel finite-state Markov chain (FSMC) optimization simulation model based on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold, the channel states and the state transition probability matrix, by using the nonuniform space division SNR quantization strategy (hereinafter referred to as Strategy 1) and the equal-area space division SNR quantization strategy (hereinafter referred to as Strategy 2). The SNR curves that are obtained via simulation closely fit the experimental results; therefore, the proposed simulation model can accurately characterize the channel state in a variety of HSR scenarios. Furthermore, the simulation results demonstrate that in the tunnel scenario, Strategy 1 realizes a smaller mean square error (MSE) and a higher modeling accuracy than Strategy 2. The MSE values of the two strategies are similar in the plain scenario. Strategy 2 realizes a smaller MSE and a higher modeling accuracy in the mountain, viaduct and cutting scenarios.
