Measurement of Free Copper(II) ions in Water Samples with Polyvinyl alcohol as a Binding Phase in Diffusive gradients in Thin-films

Abstract: A technique for the selective measurement of diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) for free Cu 2+ ions was developed using a 0.030 M solution of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the liquid binding phase with the liquid-type DGT devices (PVA DGT). The PVA DGT had a substantial binding capacity at pH 5.6 -8.6 and concentrations of competitive Na + up to 0.7 M. The measurements of PVA DGT and cupric ion selective electrode (Cu-ISE) for free Cu 2+ in synthetic river water (recovery = 97.51 ± 2.58% for PVA DGT and reco… Show more

“…A cellulose acetate dialysis membrane can be used as the diffusive phase of DGT technique. [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] It was pretreated following the procedures recommended by Li et al 16 The treated membranes were stored in deionized water. 50.0 g portion of PQAS solution was transferred into a dialysis membrane bag, prepared as described above, which was placed in deionized water for 96 h with the water replenished every 24 h. 16 This process effectively removed all of the low molecular weight PQAS that passed through the dialysis membrane.…”

“…However, polyacrylamide hydrogel has some disadvantages, such as a weak mechanical resistance and not a well-defined gel structure, and the DGT method requires elution of analyte from the binding gel that may introduce analytical deviation. Li et al invented a liquid-type DGT sampler with a diffusive phase, such as a dialysis membrane, and a liquid binding phase, such as poly(4-styrenesulfonate) solution, with some advantages, such as a good contact between the binding phase and the diffusive phase, ideal transportion and enrichment of analyte, a well-defined reproducible diffusive phase, and no need for the elution of analyte accumulated in the binding phase. , Sodium polyacrylate solution, , poly(vinyl alcohol) solution, thiol–poly(vinyl alcohol) solution, poly(aspartic acid), , and polymer-bound Schiff base have been developed as liquid binding phases recently.…”

“…0.020 M poly (4styrenesulfonate) solution [8], 0.0030 M sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) solution [9], and 0.030 M polyvinyl alcohol solution [10]) as the binding agent, has been developed with excellent contact between the two layers due to homogeneous and mobile characteristics of the liquid binding agent and better reproducibility. In addition, the direct measurements of metal concentrations in the polymer aqueous solution increases accuracy and precision without elution steps [8][9][10].…”

“…The validation of PAAS DGT for the sampling and measurement of Sb(III) was studied. The influence of a range of pH (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11) and electrolyte concentrations (0.0001-0.7 M as NaNO3) on binding capacities of PAAS DGT were also investigated.…”
