Maximum oxygen uptake in adolescents as measured by cardiopulmonary exercise testing: a classification proposal

Abstract: Objective: The identification of populational levels of maximum oxygen uptake (VO 2max ) is an aid to studies that propose to relate physical fitness to cardiovascular risk, and also for prescribing exercise and analyzing the effects of training. To date, there is no information with which this parameter can be classified in samples of adolescents from the Brazilian population. This study is, therefore, the first to propose the determination of mean VO 2max levels in a sample of the Brazilian population.Metho… Show more

“…Cardiopulmonary variables were monitored using a MedGraphics Corporation (MGC) spirometer which provided information on oxygen consumption (VO 2 ), carbon dioxide production (VCO 2 ), pulmonary ventilation (VE), ventilatory equivalent of oxygen (VE/VO 2 ), ventilatory equivalent of carbon dioxide (VE/VCO 2 ) and respiratory exchange ratio (RER = VCO 2 /VO 2 ). In this study we used a progressive ramping protocol that has been described in a previous publication, 13 increasing inclination in accordance with predicted VO 2 compared with the observed VO 2 . Testing was stopped if the subject indicated (by means of predefined gestures) fatigue or any type of discomfort that impeded continuation of the test.…”

“…Os valores médios de VO2máx encontrados para as meninas, são similares ao de nosso estudo estando entre 36,76 e 38,29 ml.kg -1 .min -1 . Outro estudo encontrou valores de 42,82 ml.kg -1 .min -1 , para meninas com resultados acima dos resultados encontrados (Rodrigues, Perez, Carletti, Bissoli, & Abreu, 2006;Vasconcelos et al, 2007).…”
